Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue is facing a new challenge - we have over 20 pugs in our care who are heartworm positive. Every one of these pugs will have to undergo expensive medical treatment for their condition, and monitored carefully in a quiet environment until they are healed. The saddest thing about this is that Heartworm can be easily prevented in pugs and all dogs and cats through the use of monthly medications from your vets. While it is not recommended that pugs receive the new 6-month duration heartworm injection, many of the vet recommended medications are safe for pugs.
Please take a look at this easy to read article about heartworm and remember - even an indoor pet can get heartworm from a mosquito bite, since mosquitoes can come into your home each time a door is opened. For more questions about heartworm, or if you suspect your pug has heartworm, please consult your vet.
