A Rescued Angel Gets Her Wings - Sweet Belle

We are so sad to report that a lovely lady named Belle went to the Rainbow Bridge a few days ago. Our rescue family sends love and support and adds many tears to those shed by Mary Rush-Griffin, Belle's mom.

A letter from Mary, Belle's mom:

I first became involved with Pug rescue when I decided to be a foster home about 6 years ago. I met some people in Luling they handed me Belle. She was a bag of bones, had bites from the peoples pit bull,skin infection.... I took her to my vet immediately because she needed help close at hand. In the trip from Luling to Wimberley, I thought a dog in her condition who was kept for years as a breed dog in a cage would be unable to bond. I was wrong.

In the 1-hour trip home, she became my constant companion. Where I went she went. She was almost blind and deaf, and over the years she became totally blind and deaf. She had such malformed limbs from years in a cage she required being carried most of the time. Belle became everything to me. She was always there for me. I loved her like no other person or animal.

She passed away Monday, December 7. Please accept my donation to the memorial page for my Pug Angel. Belle was in the rescue calender.

Update on Boca - Abused Pug's Spirit is Not Broken

Aug. 29 - An update on Boca's surgery:

Thank everyone that has donated so far to Boca and her surgeries. Boca went to surgery yesterday (Friday) and was in surgery for a little over five hours. Dr G told us that this was one of the more difficult surgeries he had ever done. The good news is that the surgery for the most part was a huge success. Her jaw is now stable and her tongue has retracted back into her mouth. So the bottom line is today Boca is resting comfortably and we hope will regain more use of her tongue. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.

This spirited little girl is Boca, a victim of abuse. Luckily, someone saved her from the terrible situation she was in and called us. When our volunteer picked Boca up, her little puggy tail wagged a thank you and she snuggled up and went to sleep, safe in the arms of rescuers at last.

Our veterinarian says Boca has been kicked, and her jaw is broken in at least two places. Boca is undergoing emergency surgery Friday to repair the damage, and the doctors say it may take more than one surgery to heal her injuries. Boca is having a very difficult time eating and drinking water, so we want to help her as quickly as possible.

Joshua - A Miracle Rescue

Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue takes in all pugs regardless of age or medical condition. Our volunteers work tirelessly to save every little pug we can. Here is the story of Joshua in the words of his foster mom, Joann. As you will see, Joshua won her heart and Joann eventually adopted Joshua into her own family.

In May I received a call to foster a pug in need. He had demodectic mange, hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms ~ the poor little guy. His name was Joshua and he looked awful. He had no hair, he had scabs everywhere, and he smelled really bad.

When I went to Westcreek and they brought him out, he was so sad looking. All I really saw was the most amazing, beautiful amber eyes asking for love! I took Joshua home and started making him welcome there. He was just a little shy at first, I think he knew how bad he looked and smelled. We did not not care, we started him on his meds and then baths.

He was not making a whole lot of improvement at first and then I thought, because he had developed some secondary infections on his skin, maybe I should just scrub him like a burn patient, so I did. After several scrubbings, the yeast and staph were gone. It left his skin really dry, so we started to bathe him with baby shampoo mixed with olive oil scalp treatment. We were amazed that after two shampoos his hair just started sprouting in so fast that in less than a week he was solid black again. He now has the softest skin and the shiniest coat.

Joshua has turned out to be the most beautiful black boy we had ever seen. He never once fussed about any treatment. He was always laid back and I think almost enjoying the baths and being showered with constant love. Of course, during all this treatment, we fell in love with little Joshua and chose to adopt him and make him a huge part of our family. He will be loved and taken care of like he deserves and will never have to go through all that again.

After many trips to the vet he is the best pug ever! We want to thank DFW Pug Rescue for saving Joshua and so many other poor pugs. If it were not for them many, many pugs would not be saved.

This my fellow Pug Lovers is Missy. She is all of a year old and has been dealt a real hard blow in life. When Missy was brought in to rescue recently, she had a severe eye injury that required her eye to be removed.

Missy had not yet gotten her sutures out when she injured her other eye. As feared, she lost that eye as well. Missy is only a year old and now totally blind with no eyes at all but this has not dampened her Pug spirit.

Missy is a very happy little girl and her little donut tail waggles so hard, we fear she is going to lift off the ground soon. Dallas pug rescue has placed a lot of blind Pugs over the years into loving homes, and, as long as you are not a furniture mover, she will do fine.

The family that is fostering Missy owns a blind Pug that they have had since 1998, and you cannot tell she is blind. Blind Pugs do great if their humans can learn how to work with them. This is our little Pookie before and after. They were going to put her to sleep after they brought us two of their other females that appeared healthy. We had her starting Christmas Eve (well, that's when Garry brought her to me) and needless to say, after losing Miss Frito we felt this was our new little angel that will hopefully be with us longer.

Hi everyone. I'm Willie the one-eared Pug. I was born in a puppy mill where my mom chewed off one of my ears when I was a wee tike. Well, I had two of them, after all. So I don't even mind that I have one ear. I am still quite handsome.

Like my mom, I grew up as a working dog in a local puppy mill. I have been working all my life and living outdoors in a pen. The breeder decided to give me up because I am really old - almost three years old, and she wants younger pugs.

The pug rescue folks said I am going to the vet's office to get tutored this week. I'm not sure what I will learn there, but someone said it has to do with juevos. I sure hope so, I do love juevos. I am very playful and I need a family who understands I am gonna need a little training about how to be an indoor pet.

So many of us have said goodbye to little puggies over the years, and some very recently. Our hearts go out to everyone who has an empty spot on their couch that was once kept warm by a snorfley loving puggy.

I created this card for Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue so they can share the sentiment with our friends.

I always wondered how on earth it was possible to survive multiple losses of these babies, since I lost one of my own, Winnie Wiggles, to encephalitis last year. But I have also learned, through fostering and volunteering and having three little pugs of my own, that the more pugs you let into your life, the more your heart expands to hold such a huge amount of love.

This card is dedicated to the pug rescuers throughout the country.

God bless you and may the angels bring every neglected, forgotten pug into the safety of your arms.

Hi good folks, I am Bugg the Pug. I am a total people pug. I am okay with other dogs and cats but I do prefer my peeps. I love to lay in the crook of your arm and snuggle at the foot of your bed at night. And yes, I am a professional snorer! I love the little eight year old I am living with now in my foster home, but I amd deaf so I can't be around very small children. I would be a a wonderful companion for someone who is home a lot because I crave human attention.

I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and needs 5ml of Prilosec twice a day, along with a low fat diet. Fortunately, I will eat anything and take my medicine easily! I also had five tumors that were removed. Two of them were Grade 2, mast cell cancer. The good news is, the margins were clear and no further treatment is necessary so I am ready for my furever family to share the snores and the love!

Ladies and Gents my name is Zaylia and I am a 6-7 month old little girl that has had a rough start in life. You see I have some kind of skin condition and my owners let it get out of hand. They gave me up because they were afraid I would infect the baby. Sheesh what about me.

Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue got me today and I am being taken to the vet in the morning to see what is going on. I am very cute and all puppy. I need a loving family that will hold me, play with me and most important of all LOVE me for the pug puppy I am.

Heartfelt thanks to Don from Junea, Alaska, who has challenged members of his pug yahoo group to give $1 per month to a list of pug rescues throughout the U.S. One of the rescues on that list is Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue. So many pug rescues across the nation are facing challenges. Pug Rescues need foster homes, funding, and volunteers.

We are so thankful for our supporters and volunteers, and for people like Don whose hearts and minds are focused on helping these precious pugs. In 2008, Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue had thousands of dollars in vet bills and took in a record number of pugs. Even a few dollars a month can make a huge difference in saving the lives of these little ones.

Thanks to Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue volunteers Tim and Glynna for sharing their annual picture of their wonderful pugs. Each year Tim and Glynna's holiday picture reminds me of that scene in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer when Rudolph visits the Island of Misfit Toys. That's the part of the movie where all the toys who were discarded or forgotten for one reason or another are gathered, just hoping to be rescued and loved.

Our rescue pugs are much more precious than toys. I think sometimes people forget that pets are not things to be discarded or forgotten. Even blind, deaf, and handicapped elderly pugs deserve a chance at having a loving home, and that's why we turn away no pug regardless of age or medical condition.

I think if you eavesdropped at night on the prayers of our rescue volunteers, you would hear a common wish. God help us to rescue them all and to find wonderful homes for every unloved and unwanted pug.

From our Rescuers in Houston

Bambi crossed Rainbow Bridge this morning peacefully in a special garden surrounded by flowers and love. Her cause of death was congestive heart failure due to her previous owners not administering heartworm prevention.

Bambi left us this morning after dealing with a bad heart that was so damaged by heartworm disease there was no predicting how long she would be with DFW Pug Rescue. She became one of our hospice cases and lived in a home with Pugs. She was sent to us via "Theresa and Charly" who thought she was a Pug and we headed out to pick her up. We thank both of them. Upon arrival to pick up this Pug, out came an elderly Boston Terrier, skinny, shaky but immediately kissed me on the face. We would never leave her behind. We put her on the website as our "Pug with a Boston accent:.

Her prognosis was grim but DFW never turns its head away. She lived over a year. It was such a privilege to be able to care for this little girl and actually watch her bounce back for a period of time. We knew her time was short. Bambi is now at peace with her Maker and playing with all of those who have crossed Rainbow Bridge before her. Her bed is empty tonight and there was one less bowl to fill and it hurts but in time it will lessen. God just made room for another one to come our way. We wait patiently.

Bucket continues to buck all odds and seems to be growing up to be a nice young Pug. The doc says the disease he has will eventually take over, but for now he is just an average looking little boy always on the lookout for some mischief. Bucket first came to us after he had been left in a bucket at the door of animal control when he was just 3 weeks old.

Bucket still has an occasional seizure, but as long as his family is strict with the two anti-seizure drugs he is on, he does very well. The drugs are a bit pricey and Bucket wants to thank everyone that donated in his donation bucket at Pug-O-Ween this year that allows him to have the medicine he needs.

Bucket is in permanent foster care with eight other Pugs and is doing well. If you would like to contribute to his medical cost please use the donate button on this page.
