Pauline - A Special Needs Pug

Pretty Pauline

Pauline's mammary tumor

Pauline is a little senior pug lady with perfect poise and personality plus! As you can see from the pictures, she has a large mammary tumor that will be removed when she is spayed. She is recovering from two heartworm treatments and will go back for a third heartworm treatment next week.

Pauline is approximately 10 years old and has limited vision, but gets around just fine. She is a very sweet, easy to take care of, senior lady. Please donate to help with Pauline's care. We are hoping she will be well and ready to find the perfect furever loving home in time for Valentine's Day!!

Looking Back on 2009

Henry the Pug

Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue had its biggest rescue year in history in 2009. We took in some very sick pugs last year and, though some could not be saved, we were able to provide medical care and find loving homes for many who had never known a kind human touch before they came to us.

Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue has rescued more than 4800 pugs since we were formed 12 years ago. Our mission is No pug left behind. Without your support to our rescue organization, thousands of lost, forgotten and homeless pugs would not be in loving homes today. Thank you for everything you have done, no matter how large or small, to help us save these precious pugs. Just by sharing this newsletter with your friends, you can help these pugs.

Here are our stats for 2009:

Total Pugs Adopted: 460

Total Number of Events: 77

Veterinary Expenses: $164,943.25

Pugs in Foster Homes on Dec. 31, 2009 - 76

Ony the Pug - One Step at a Time

Ony and Melissa, his foster mom

From Melissa, Ony's Foster Mom:
"Ony grows stronger every day and makes me realize that
hope is always there and to never give up.
I'm not giving up on him no matter what
because he has not given up on me."

Ony the Pug is 7 years old and has a hard time walking and standing up. Ony's family said they were moving and could not take him with them. He came to Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue about a week ago and was taken to our neurologist's office for a myelogram and a CT scan Wednesday. This will tell us if surgery will help him.

Dr. Ducote and her staff were encouraged with the progress Ony has made under his foster mom Melissa's care. He is now standing and walking - or trying to walk. Previously, he was incontinent and now is letting Melissa know when he needs to go out. She carries him out to the grass and he will relieve himself and walk over to the edge of her patio to be let back in. Melissa says he can maneuver on grass better than floors or concrete.

Ony is another little soul who gives those around him courage. We are going to do everything we can to help him get back his quality of life and find a loving home. We are so thankful to Melissa for the love she is giving him in his foster home.

Ony the Pug - One Step at a Time

Ony and his foster mom, Melissa

Ony has difficulty standing and walking

With love and care, the sparkle in his eye is back!

Melissa: Ony makes me realize hope is always there...

Ony the Pug is 7 years old and has a hard time walking and standing up. Ony came to rescue in October after his family said they were moving and could not take him with them. Ony was taken to our neurologist's office for a myelogram and a CT scan on Wednesday. He will need surgery to fix the discs that are pressing on his spine and preventing him from walking.

Dr. Ducote and her staff were encouraged with the progress Ony has made under his foster mom Melissa's care. Previously sad and nonambulatory, Ony is now able to move around a little bit and the sparkle has returned to his eyes. Before, he was incontinent and now he is letting Melissa know when he needs to go out. She carries him out to the grass and he will relieve himself and walk over to the edge of her patio to be let back in. Melissa says he can maneuver on grass better than floors or concrete. Daily at-home physical therapy and special exercises are just part of Ony's success, thanks to the love and care of his foster mom.

Ony's progress is good but he needs your help! Please donate to the Ony Fund so we can help Ony to walk again. He deserves nothing less.

From Melissa, Ony's Foster Mom:

"Ony grows stronger every day and
makes me realize that hope is always there
and to never give up. I'm not giving up on him
no matter what because he has not given up on me."

Rowdy Has Gone to the Bridge

Rowdy the Pug
A Brave Girl and
Heaven's Newest Angel

We are heartbroken to report that Rowdy passed away this week while in the care of our dedicated veterinary staff. Rowdy was hit by a car and subsequently abandoned by her owners before she came to rescue. Our medical team has given her around the clock care for over 2 weeks, and she has had two surgeries. We were all hopeful she was going to recover and find the perfect, loving home. Our vet was devastated when he shared the news. He reported that Rowdy never complained about any treatment she received, and was always happy for a kind word or touch, and wagged her tail whenever you spoke to her.

Today our hearts are broken. We will never, ever forget her loving spirit and her will to survive. Through every treatment and exam she was a love.

Please remember Rowdy in your prayers. She is the newest angel in heaven.

Ozzie aka Mister August, Calendar Pug

Ozzie, Mister August
Calendar Pug

My name is Ozzie and I’m 5 years old. On December 10th, 2006 my mom, Maury, adopted me from the DFW Pug Rescue. Being one lucky pug, a transporter brought me to a Petco store to meet up with my new family.

I love to go for walks, car rides, and anything a regular dog would do! But my before life wasn’t so great. Thanks to the DFW Pug Rescue, I can leave that behind. I didn’t know what a dog was supposed to do. My brother, Toby, taught me how you’re supposed to pee on everything you see during walks, sniff everything you smell during car rides, chase those annoying little cats around the house, and pull on the chew toy super hard during tug-o-war.

My mom noticed how when she’d take me places and I’d meet strangers, I duck down and get a little nervous. But the most amazing thing was the day she got me. She remembers how as soon as she opened the car door, I hopped out, and placed my two front paws on her knees, wagging my cinnamon bun tail. I think I was truly meant to be part of my family that I have now. And none of this would have ever happened if I wasn’t rescued by the DFW Pug Rescue. And when I was told about being on that calendar…well I was such a proud little puglet.

Bubba Lee Jo - Soon to Be a Supermodel!

Bubba Lee Jo

Hello! My name is Bubba Lee Jo. I am just a young kid, and don't know why I was put in Pug Jail. There were lots of people walking past me, but no one stopped to say "hello". Well, I have a winky eye, so maybe someone did and I just couldn't see them with my hurt eye or maybe it's because I lost all my fur.

Anyway, after a couple days of scratching and waiting, a nice lady picked me up and took me to the doctor. I was so happy when I found out she was from Pug Rescue! I thought they were just a legend, but they are real! I am at the doctor right now, and they are putting nice things on my skin to make me feel better. They said my skin does not have sarcoptic mange, but I have heartworms and someone said my hips are funny so they may need to be looked at, too. The rescuers said I am what they call a high-dollar rescue so please help if you can. I'm just glad to be inside and getting all this attention.

Thank you pug rescue! I will be ready for winter with beautiful new fur in no time!

Brave Quanah

Hello my name is Quanah and I am about 5 years old. I am a very wise Pug as I am named after the last great Comanche War Chief Quanah Parker. Anyway they tell me I am skin and bones but not sure what they expected after being on the trail by myself for so long. I had a huge flea problem but Dr G took care of that right away.

I also have those nasty heartworms but they promised me I would be OK and they will take care of those as well. I did weigh about 18 pounds and have had a hard life. I have a lot of scars on my legs from possibly being caged most of the time. The guys at the hospital said I was the cutest thing and so calm. I just let them rub all over me and when they stuck me with that needle I did not even wiggle... What would they think of a great war chief if I cried? Anyway I am getting all my stuff fixed and I will be available very soon.

Please ask for me on an application today. I am a keeper!
